Aaron Lee Soon Yong (was born on June 7th, 1972), he is a Singaporean prize-winning poet who writes in English. He was born in Malaysia but received his education in Singapore and became a Singaporean in 1996.
Aaron Lee Biography
During his days at Raffles Institution, a high school in Singapore, Aaron began writing poetry where he had friends with other students who would eventually also go on to become Singaporean writers. By 1990, Jonathan Kuan Wei Han, Tong Jo Tze, Alvin Pang and Jeffrey Lim, along with other ex-school mates, had interested a Singapore publisher, VJ Times, in publishing an anthology of poems contributed by the five authors. This collection, In Search of Words, was published in 1991.
The Straits Times named Lee’s first collection of poems, A Visitation of Sunlight, one of 1997’s best books. In a resurgence of interest in Singapore poetry centered on a new generation of Singapore poets in the late 1990s, the collection was well received and played a part.
In 1999, his book’s title poem was selected for the Poems on the Move program of the National Arts Council, a national initiative to bring poetry to the public transport masses.
In publications such as Rhythms: a Millennial Anthology of Poetry (Singapore), the New Straits Times (Malaysia), Anglistik (Germany), and Fifty on 50 (Singapore), Lee’s work has been anthologized.
Lee is the co-editorof No Other City: the Ethos Anthology of Urban Poetry and Love Gathers All: the Philippines-Singapore Love Poetry Anthology (for which the Singapore International Foundation awarded the editors). In Malaysia, Germany, the US, the Philippines, and Australia, he gave talks and readings.
Lee released his second collection of poetry, Five Right Angles in 2007. The book became a finalist in the 2008 Singapore Literature Prize awards.
In the literary scene, he is active in mentoring young poets and conducting creative writing workshops and seminars at schools. He is married to Namiko Chan, an artist and educator. He is a Christian with a range of Christian themes and images in his work.
In 2014, at the Singapore Writers Festival, Lee launched his third collection of poetry, Coastlands. Coastlands documents the experience of his life as a pilgrim that still finds its place in the wider world.
