Bonnie Bartlett Career

Bartlett studied acting with Lee Strasberg and started playing the heroine “Vanessa Dale Raven” on the soap opera Love of Life from 1955 to 1959 for actress Peggy McCay in television. She also played an earlier role on the program in which she briefly played Ellie Crown’s character, a role that Hildy Parks played for several years. Then, in the 1960s, she moved on tonight roles.

Her most popular role was on St. Elsewhere as Ellen Craig. She took on greater prominence in the 1984–1985 season when the storyline included the marital problems of Ellen and Mark. In the next season, the storyline deepened when their son was killed and their granddaughter had to be raised. Bartlett won Emmys back-to-back and became a player in the contract. Ellen and Mark’s divorce and slow reconciliation after the loss of their granddaughter in a custody dispute with her birth mother included further difficult material.

Bartlett accepted only small guest appearances on programs such as The Golden Girls, Gunsmoke, The Rockford Files, and The Waltons for many years, as well as a recurring role as Grace Snider Edwards on the Prairie Little House from 1974 to 1977. In the 1980s, her acting career picked up significantly, including the V and North and South miniseries: Book II.

Bartlett and husband William Daniels made the history of the Emmy Awards in 1986 when they became the second real-life married couple to win the same night’s performing awards. The feat was first performed by Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne in 1965. Bartlett and Daniels won on the St. Elsewhere TV series for their portrayals of Dr. Mark and Mrs. Ellen Craig. They later acted together again in a season of Daniels’ ABC series Boy Meets World when she played a college dean who employed the character of her husband, and their characters later married.

When St. Elsewhere came to an end in 1988, Bartlett’s career moved into a wide range of guest-starring appearances, including major roles on Wiseguy as a tough and corrupt sewage business matriarch; as Andrea Drey, Secretary-General of the United Earth Oceans Organization (UEO) on SeaQuest DSV; on Home Improvement as Lucille Taylor’s mother; and on ER as Ruth Katherine Greek Taylor’s mother; The last feature film role of Bartlett to date has been in the movie Valediction.
