Chris and Bridey Elliott on “Clara’s Ghost”

Chris and Bridey Elliott are father and daughter. Chris is, of course, Chris Elliott. The guy who starred in Cabin Boy and Something About Mary. Who’s currently a regular on the TV show Schitt’s Creek.

Tons more. Bridey, his daughter, wrote and directed a new movie called Clara’s Ghost, which you can buy or rent now. It’s a family collaboration: Bridey also stars in the movie, along with Chris, her sister Abby, and her mother Paula.

And it’s also kind of a horror movie? Listen to see what we mean. Jesse and the Elliotts talk about the film, family dynamics, and why Chris Elliott did an impression of Marlon Brando dancing around a bunch of bananas on Letterman.

Bridey Elliott and Abby Elliott

Bridey and Abby Elliott Are Sisters Fending Off a Supernatural Spirit in ‘Clara’s Ghost’ Trailer (Exclusive)

The dark comedy Clara’s Ghost revolves around a self-absorbed showbiz family being haunted by a supernatural entity, so it seems a natural fit that the movie’s writer-director, Bridey Elliott, recruited her own (seemingly less self-obsessed) showbiz family to star: Real-life sister Abby Elliott (Saturday Night Live) plays her sister, with parents Paula Niedert Elliott and Chris Elliott (Schitt’s Creek) co-starring as her parents.

ET has the exclusive poster and trailer for Clara’s Ghost, which shows suburban matriarch Clara Reynolds becoming fed up with her husband and daughters constantly making fun of her and taking solace in a ghost (played by Isidora Goreshter).

“I’ve been seeing this woman around. She seems to go wherever I go,” Clara says, though when her husband suggests she makes friends, she replies, “I think that would be weird at this point.”

Clara’s Ghost, which also features Haley Joel Osment, premiered earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival and is in theaters Dec. 6 and available digitally and on VOD on Dec. 7.

Bridey Elliott Pitch-Black Comedy.

Clara’s Ghost Is a Rough, Revealing Look at a Famous Family

Bridey Elliott, daughter of Chris, enlists her father, sister, and mother in this intriguingly pitch-black comedy.

There are no people like show people, as the old song goes. And the show people playing exaggerated versions of themselves in Clara’s Ghost would likely agree.

They’d also be quick to sing along, jazz-hands in tow—but through about eighteen different levels of irony besotted with resentment, jealousy and self-loathing. There’s a lot going on with these characters.

This extremely homemade film, written and directed by Bridey Elliott and starring her own mostly-famous family, is extremely funny at times and nerve-wracking at others, but also pitch black to the point that many will find it unbearable. I say stick with it; if nothing else, the film is a work of great daring.

Chris Elliott (maybe you remember him from eating dog food on the old David Letterman show, or at least the 90s classic Get A Life) plays the paterfamilias, washed-up actor Ted Reynolds. He is devoted to his wife Clara (Paula Niedert Elliott), so much that he’ll drive her to the local sleepy Connecticut police station to make a report about a missing shoe. Both are drunks, but Clara is beyond making Nora Charles-like wry remarks and is now having hallucinations. Luckily, their house may actually be haunted.

Daughters Julie and Riley (recent S.N.L. grad Abby Elliott and Bridey herself) are taking the train up to their folks to celebrate their dog’s birthday. They were once the Sweet Sisters, tween superstars, though the biz has not been kind to them lately. Smiling for Instagram makes up the bulk of their output these days.

There’s enough old money lingering around — eagle-eyed Elliott scholars will see evidence of Bridey’s grandfather Bob Elliott, of “Bob and Ray” fame — so the family lives comfortably, if not happily.

The ochre tapestries, numerous chandeliers and a very busy crystal ice bucket set the stage for the film’s centerpiece: an epic night of vituperative sparring and drunken invective. It starts when Haley Joel Osment shows up to deliver pot.

Julie, Riley, and Dad can turn on the B.S. when a magazine wants to photograph a family of happy thespians, but Mom, whose mere presence can ruin the shot, is reaching her breaking point.

This manages to be sad and poignant, but also hilarious, as when she drunkenly leaves a message with a California winery to thank them for their fruity top notes.
