Dylan McDermott Family
Mark was born to Diane and Richard McDermott. He has an Italian (from his maternal grandfather), Irish, English, and French descent. Mark has a younger sister, Robin. His mother was fifteen and father was seventeen when Mark was born. By 1967, his parents had divorced and McDermott and his sister were living with their maternal grandmother Avis (Rogers) Marino.
Diane was shot and killed on February 9, 1967 . Her death was initially ruled an accident, but police later claimed that evidence they had found would be enough to file murder charges against John Sponza, who had been living with her at the time. John told authorities that Diane had shot herself (despite the fact that she was right-handed and shot in the back of the left side of her head) after picking up a gun he had been cleaning. John, who police say had ties to organized crime, was then killed in 1972. His body was found in the trunk of a car in a Waltham, Massachusetts, grocery store parking lot.
Mark and his sister were raised by their maternal grandmother Avis in Waterbury. In his teenage years, McDermott began taking trips to visit his biological father, who owned the West Fourth Street Saloon in Greenwich Village, New York. The two would then go to the movies and the younger McDermott would work in his father’s bar, serving drinks and breaking up fights. Mark would also fast-talk his way into the Mudd Club and Studio 54. He was uncomfortable with himself as a teenager, saying he had a “Dorothy Hamill hairdo.” McDermott began to imitate his acting heroes, such as Marlon Brando and Humphrey Bogart, to adopt their demeanor. He graduated from Holy Cross High School in Waterbury in 1979.
His father’s third wife was playwright Eve Ensler (author of The Vagina Monologues), who legally adopted Mark when he was 15 and she was 23. Eve has since divorced his father. Ensler, with whom Mark has remained close, and encouraged him to pursue an acting career. He began writing roles for him into her plays. After she suffered a miscarriage, Mark took on the name Dylan, the name planned for her unborn child. Mark attended acting school at the Jesuit-run Fordham University. He as well studied under Sanford Meisner at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre in New York City, the same year as Allison Janney.
