Albert Hughes and Allen Hughes (Popularly known as the Hughes brothers) are twin American film directors and producers. They were born on April 1, 1972, Detroit, Michigan, US. The Hughes are famous for co-directing generally violent, visceral movies like Menace II Society, Dead Presidents, From Hell and The Book of Eli.
Hughes Brothers Biography
Hughes Brothers dropped out of high school as teenagers after Allen had a son at the age of 18 and started directing for artists like Tone Loc and Tupac Shakur. They featured in their first, Menace II Society, in 1993 when they were 20 years old. It which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in the same year. The screenplay was written by Tyger Williams who shared story credit with the brothers. It became box office sensation and was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for Best First Feature.
Dead Presidents was Hughes Brothers’ second film in 1995. It starred Larenz Tate. The film followed the racially charged Vietnam War era and was released at the New York Critics Film FestivalThe film. However, Dead Presidents did not as much of a profit as their first film. They followed Dead Presidents with a feature-length documentary on pimp culture and exploitation of women which premiered at the 1999 Sundance Film Festival.
Allen Hughes directed a few episodes of Touching Evil in which his brother was the executive producer. He then directed the 2005 television feature Knights of the South Bronx. He also directed a segment of New York, I Love You, starring Drea De Matteo and Bradley Cooper in 2009.
Allen Hughes also directed Broken City, a crime thriller, in 2013. The film starred Mark Wahlberg and Russell Crowe. He then directed a four-part 2017 HBO documentary miniseries The Defiant Ones, on music producers Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine.
Albert Hughes directed his first solo feature film, Alpha, in 2018. The film is based on a story written by Hughes, and holds an approval rating of 79% and is ‘certified fresh’ on review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes. Alpha was written by Daniele Sebastian Wiedenhaupt.
Between 1993 and 2001 the brothers did most of their collaboration. Albert moved to Prague, Czech Republic, in 2004, meaning less collaboration, they only came back together in directing the 2010 film, The Book of Eli. Since 2005, they have been involved in directing and producing film and television projects individually.
