J. K. Simmons is an American actor and voice actor, born Jonathan Kimble Simmons. He is known for playing in Law an Order, Oz and The Closer. From 2017 he has been performing regularly in the Starz series Counterpart. His other notable films include The Spider-Man Trilogy and Whiplash in 2014.

He has voiced some animated characters like Tenzin in Avatar: The Legend Of Korra, Kai in Kung Fu Panda 3, Cave Johnson in the video game Portal 2 and Mayor Lionheart in the movie Zootopia. He has also appeared in commercials for Farmers Insurance and voiced the Yellow M&M.

J. K. Simmons began his career on Broadway. He played in Guys and Dolls in 1992, then went and sang in Das Barbecü. He later played in a revival of Carousel and in an Off-Broadway musical Birds Of Paradise.

Acting

He acted in Law and Order, New York Undercover, Oz, 3: The Dale Earnhardt Story. He went on to the series The Closer, Homicide: Life On The Street. His other roles are in Arrested Development and Adventures of Pete & Pete. In 2005, he played in Thank You For Smoking and Juno in 2007. He later played in all three of Sami Raimi‘s Spider-Man from 2002 to 2007 alongside Tobey Maguire. He then played in Burn After Reading as a CIA superior in 2008 and later in I Love You, Man.

J. K. Simmons has continued to several films including Up in the Air, Jennifer’s Body, Labor Day, Growing Up Fisher, Whiplash, Kong: Skull Island, Justice League and later in Batman. In his way, he has collected: An Academy Award in 2014, a Golden Globe Award in 2015 and an Academy Award for best supporting actor.

Voice Acting

After his performance in the Spider-Man trilogy, he has received a lot of animated characters to lend his voice to. Starting from Tenzin in The Legend of Korra, Scientist Stanford Pines in Gravity Falls, Some seasons in The Simpsons, Some parts of Kong: Skull Island, Some episodes of Pound Puppies by The Hub, Kai in Kung Fu Panda 3 and Mayor Lionheart in Zootopia.

He has also appeared in Marvel’s animated series Ultimate Spider-Man, The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and again in Spider-Man Homecoming. He has voiced the Protagonist’s boss in Young Adult and has recorded an audiobook Tom Clancy’s Net Force: Point of Impact.

Commercial

Simmons is featured as professor Nathaniel Burke in adverts for Farmers Insurance. He also voiced the Yellow M&M in the product commercials. He has also done voice-over work at Norelco razors.

The Closer

Here he plays as assistant police chief Pope. The film mostly revolves around Brenda, a Los Angeles Department deputy chief who is very good at her work in interrogating and obtaining convicting confessions.
