Gill began his career with recording his first demo at the age of 16. The demo made him got a contract with Cotillion Records, a subsidiary of Atlantic Records, that marked the official beginning of his music career. He later released his debut album Johnny Gill in April 1983 and it was fairly successful. Him working with his longtime friend Stacy Lattisaw on the album Perfect Combination (1984) that he later released his second solo album in 1985.Johnny Gill Photo Johnny got recruited in 1987 to join the R&B group “New Edition”. The group that was formerly comprised of  Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, Bobby Brown, Ronnie DeVoe, and Ralph Tresvant. Brown then got to be voted out of the group a few years before Gill was brought on. He later became one of New Edition’s lead vocalists and he was a major contributor in the success of the group’s next album Heart Break (1988).
He later resumed his solo career when New Edition entered a hiatus in 1990 and he released 3rd highly successful solo albums before the group got reunited in 1996. He later formed the 3-man group LSG in 1997 alongside Gerald Levert and Keith Sweat and together, they released 2 successful albums; Levert.Sweat.Gill. of 1997 and LSG2 of 2003. He later reunited with all 4 New Edition bandmates in 2004 and they released a full-length album One Love
He as well made progress in his solo career with the release of his 6th and 7th solo albums Still Winning of 2011 and Game Changer of 2014. He has continued to go on tours as a member of New Edition though the group has not released any new body of music since 2004. New Edition received a star on the Hollywood walk of fame on January 23, 2017.
