Kim Deal born (Kimberley Ann Deal), with her stage name (Mrs. John Murphy)is an American singer-songwriter and musician. She is well known for her music world as bassist and co-vocalist in the influential alternative rock band Pixies, before going on to form her own band The Breeders in 1989.

Kim along with her twin sister, Kelley, Kim jumped began their music career music-making an early, collaborating with her sibling as a folk-rock duo that played at a variety of venues, including local truck stops.Kim Deal Photo In their early 20s that Deal began to gain fame. After her marriage in 1983, she and John Murphy her husband moved to Boston where, in 1986, a newspaper ad calling for a bass player caught her attention. She auditioned and then joined the band. The Pixies, a groundbreaking alternative band was formed born.
While playing the shadow of the group’s guitarist and lead singer Black Francis, she adopted the stage name Mrs. John Murphy, helped steer the band toward becoming a critical success. With a sound that mixed surfer rock tones with punk and their own unique alternative approach, The Pixies got influenced the shape and scope of the alternative rock scene of the early 1990s. Kurt Cobain told reporters that Nirvana’s breakthrough song “Smells Like Teen Spirit” was “basically trying to rip off the Pixies.”
Her relationship with her band with Francis, in particular, wasn’t always easy. She got frustrated by her lack of creative influence. Sensing things wouldn’t change for her with The Pixies, she sought out different side projects. Deal eventually reached out to Throwing Muses guitarist Tanya Donelly, and in 1990 the two formed The Breeders, an off-shoot of a project Kim and her sister Kelley had begun as teenagers. The group would eventually include Kelley Deal in its lineup.
In 1990, the group released its debut album, Pod. Not long after, the group released the EP, Safari. Like her previous work with The Pixies, The Breeders’ music was received well critically but was not a giant commercial success.
In 1993 The Pixies had called it quits and Deal, along with The Breeders excluding  Donnelly, who’d left to start a new group, Belly. it released a follow-up album, Last Splash. Backed by the hit single “Cannonball”, the group, which as well featured Jim MacPherson on drums and Josephine Wiggs on bass, became a favorite on MTV and mainstream radio.

Deal has solid bodied basses. She initially played an Aria Pro II Cardinal Series in the Pixies, which actually belonged to her sister and the Breeders bandmate Kelley. This guitar can be heard throughout the Pixies’ first two albums, Come On Pilgrim and as well Surfer Rosa, and then again in The Kelley Deal 6000, Kelley’s mid-nineties solo project.
When it came time to record Doolittle, Gil Norton who was the producer insisted that Deal change basses, which she did with a 1962 Fender Precision Reissue. She then continued to use this guitar throughout the years, though by the time of the Pixies’ next album, 1990’s Bossanova, she turned to a new Music Man StingRay.
