Sean Lennon Career
In 1996, Ono invited Cibo Matto’s Miho Hatori and Yuka Honda to remix the song “Talking to the Universe” for a Rising EP Rising Mixes remix. They met Lennon and invited him as a bass player to join them on tour. This eventually led Lennon to contribute to their Butter 08 side-project and become a member of the group. He continued to play on tour with them, joining them on television, and on their EP Super Relax he provided bass guitar and vocals.
Into the Sun, Lennon’s solo debut, released in 1998. Spike Jonze directed a music video for “Home,” a single from the album, enjoying extended airplay on MTV. Fellow Cibo Matto member Yuka Honda, who claimed Lennon was his inspiration for the album, produced the album. They established both a personal relationship and a creative relationship.
After Grand Royal Records ‘ demise in 2001, Lennon signed with Capitol Records, but until February 2006, when “Dead Meat” was released as the first single from his new album, Friendly Fire, no solo material surfaced. In early 2006, a promotional trailer for Friendly Fire’s CD / DVD package was leaked online. The trailer featured scenes from the album’s movie version, a music video DVD made up of a movie. The videos were actually screen tests for Coin Locker Babies, another project that Lennon is working on, which has become his new album’s cinematic counterpart.
