In ‘Bird Box,’ Trevante Rhodes of ‘Moonlight’ fights terror you can’t look at

Trevante Rhodes had a breakthrough role as the adult Chiron in the Oscar-winning “Moonlight.” Now he is facing apocalyptic horror with Sandra Bullock in the new Netflix movie “Bird Box.” Here are some essentials on the 28-year-old actor who’s emerged as a Hollywood contender.

Where you’ve seen him recently: Since 2016’s “Moonlight,” Rhodes has appeared in the “Predator” remake and “12 Strong,” the film version of Michigan writer Doug Stanton’s nonfiction book about a Special Forces team in Afghanistan, “12 Strong: The Declassified True Story of the Horse Soldiers.”

How he got discovered: He was studying corporate communications at the University of Texas at Austin, where he ran for the track and field team, when he was stopped during a jog and asked to audition for an acting role, according to Texas Monthly. He wound up not getting the part, but he moved to Los Angeles to pursue acting after graduating in 2012.

Yes, he was in that Jay-Z video: Rhodes was part of the star-studded cast for the 2017 “Family Feud” video by director Ava DuVernay, which also featured Beyoncé, Michael B. Jordan, Jessica Chastain and Thandie Newton, to drop a few names.

His role in “Bird Box”: He plays Tom, one of the people seeking shelter inside the same house after a mysterious global catastrophe hits. It prompts those who look at some unknown, unexplained presence to kill themselves. Level-headed and empathetic, Tom bonds with Sandra Bullock’s pregnant character, Malorie, in the struggle to survive.

Working with a blindfold: “It was almost like learning to ride a bike,” says Rhodes, who, along with the rest of the cast, worked with a blind instructor on how to navigate spaces without relying on his sight.

The set’s mood: Rhodes praises director Susanne Bier for creating a very calm, relaxed atmosphere where the actors still could tap into the anxiety and tension of the film’s situation. He also lauds Bullock for keeping up everyone’s spirits, saying she teased him and others constantly to lighten the mood.

What he would do in a crisis like “Bird Box”: Rhodes says he’d turn to his track and field past. “I’d probably run as fast as I could and find somewhere to hide and hope there was food and water to last for a while,” he says, echoing his character’s choice. But he’d rather not contemplate that possibility. “I’m not really a scary-movie person,” he says.
